August Day at The Choptank Headwaters

Date:August 2007

Water: Choptank River, Headwaters, Greensboro, Maryland

Mishaps: Dragged bass through he mud twice since tavel rod was too light to hoist and I had to go back to the camper to get the camera before releasing it.

I was fishing early in the headwaters of the Choptank River in August from within the Holiday Park Campground. I was using a 4" Purple Berkley Power Worm and 2/0 EWG Gamakatsu hook with my ML 6' three-piece rod and 6lb test Suffix Line with the classic Daiwa SS700 spinning reel.

I had all ready caught one small LM off of a log in 12-18" of water. Before I left I decided to make one more cast to an open area. As soon as my worm settled to the bottom I started to see the line tighten up and felt some weight. I reached back to set the hook strongly - a challenge with such a light rod. The large bass wrapped around some trees but I finally coaxed her out and had to drag her across the mud. I have estimated that this bass was approx 5 1/2 lbs and approx 25-27" long.
